How to remember new words better

The main goal of all the methods I mention is to leave your mother tongue out of the process. It also helps to remember words easier and longer than with old-fashioned memorizing and repeating.

Try all the methods to see what works best for you. You can also absolutely use all of them to make it even more efficient or choose your method based on the word you want to learn.

1 : Doodle. If you are a visual learner this method is for you. To practice and memorize the words, draw a little doodle of the meaning. While you are drawing repeat the word over and over again. You can make the drawing as elaborate or as simple as you like. You can draw abstract emotions and words as well. It doesn’t have to be reserved for objects and animals only.

2 : Example sentences. This is the simplest way and requires less creativity. Write down 3 sentences with every word. It is always best to put what you learn to use immediately, and this method does just that.

3 : Emotions. This is a very abstract one but not less effective. Associate an emotion or memory to every word. Let’s say you want to learn the word ‘apple’. Feel the taste of an apple, or think about the huge apple tree in Granny’s garden. You can even eat an apple!

4 : Definition. Why not be the author of your own dictionary? Write down the definition in your own words.

5 : Act it out!: Here is a video of how:

The number of words you learn per day can also affect your ability to remember them better. Read more about it here: Build your vocabulary sustainably

CHALLENGE: I challenge you to learn two words per day for a month. Watch a movie or read a story in the language you learn on the first day, and do the same move at the end of the challenge. I guarantee you will see the difference. Let me know if you have completed it,

Zsófi
