Language learning with movies and shows

Learning a language by watching movies

How can you make the most out of language learning with movies and shows? A lot of people like to practice a language by watching movies. But how can you improve by watching YouTube or Netflix?

Cozy up, get a snack and a drink put on your favorite show in your target language and let’s start

  • Commenting on the movie: Make comments to yourself about the appearance of the characters and the events unfolding. For example: “The girl is wearing such an elegant red dress. It makes her stand out. ” or “He’s gonna fall if he is not careful! He should be more cautious…”
  • Summarize the story to yourself after the movie. You can either write it down or just talk to yourself as if you would explain it to a friend.
  • Practice grammar tenses: You can grab a grammar book or just go on the internet and look up all the tenses that you have learned already. Go over them one by one. Check the sentence structure and when the tense is used. Make up sentences about the story of the movie in that tense.
  • Practice your pronunciation by repeating some of the sentences you hear in the movie.

Here is a funny short no speech video of one of my childhood favorites to try out some of the tricks I’ve just mentioned with. Have fun!

Enjoy the movie:)
