You have found what you are looking for. I know you have been overwhelmed and confused about what to give to the language learner in your life. So to help you out, as a fellow language lover, I would like to give you a little inspiration with this list of creative and unique gift ideas.
You are learning languages and have no idea what to ask for? Just share this list with your loved ones 😉
There are low budget as well as generous options, stuff for family, friends and even co-workers, schoolmates and relatives.
Also, a few of these gifts you can give them even if you can’t meet them personally, to let them know you appreciate them.
Netflix in their target language: Want to give a gift that keeps giving? Buy a Netflix account for them and set the primary language to their target language. Boom! You have just provided them with an endless source for fun language activities.
Workshops related to the culture: As I have mentioned in Immerse yourself in the culture learning about the culture of the language you learn is extremely important, so why not be the person who provides it for them? Get them a gift card for a workshop related to the culture of the language they learn. For example, if they learn French, get them a macaroon making course. For Portuguese, try Capoeira. Yes, it might not be directly linked to language learning, I know, but hey, you can go with them and enjoy it too.
Dance class: Your person is learning Spanish? Get them a salsa or son dance course. Crazy about Yoruba? Surprise them with Nigerian dance lessons. Fluent Korean? Help them unleash their inner K-pop star. Find out if the language your loved one is learning has a dance connected to it and see if they teach it where your person lives.
An ethnic dinner: Take them to a restaurant where they serve food of the country they learn the language of. You can learn a lot about a culture through their cuisine.
A book: No, not a language book ( it is not a bad option, but come on, it would be too obvious… Haha) a book about the history of the country where they speak the language, or a book about famous people of that country, any literature written by a local, a cookbook of the country’s cuisine or even about their traditional dresses if it is something your person is interested in. If you want to be extra awesome, try to get it in that language of course.
Photo book: Get them a coffee table book of beautiful pictures of the country they learn the language of.
A subscription to a library: of foreign-language literature, or a library specifically of that language ( usually embassies or cultural institutes should have one )
A plane ticket: Want to give a gift they will remember forever and have the means? Get them a plane ticket to the country where they speak the language your person wants to learn so they can practice what they have learned the most authentic way.
A language course gift card: Ok, this one might be evident but I had to throw it in here. 🙂
Hope this gave you a little inspiration,
Zsófi
