6 ways to use a simple text when learning a language

Text to learn a language

There are many ways you can utilize a simple text to study a language, and I’ve noticed that they strengthen different skills.

In this article, I’ll show you 6 ways to practice pronunciation, improve your vocabulary and memory all by using one simple text in your target language.

  1. read it out loud: Great way to practice pronunciation and thinking in your target language.
  2. copy it: Copying a text by hand helps to memorize new words and embed and reinforce correct grammar structures. It’s also great for correcting minor errors, such as inproper usage of the definite article.
  3. find synonyms: Rewrite the text using synonyms or phrases. It helps you think in your target language and speak more eloquently with a richer vocabulary.
  4. scan reading: Scan reading is reading a text without looking up words in the dictionary, only concentrating on the general content. It strengthens reading comprehension skills and the ability to understand the essence of a text without knowing the meaning of all the words in it.
  5. in-depth reading: In-depth reading is when you look up the words you are not familiar with in the dictionary and analyze the text in depth. It helps to build vocabulary and reading comprehension. It is also excellent for correcting minor errors, just like rewriting.
  6. summarizing: Summarizing a text after reading it and writing a brief extract of it helps reading comprehension and thinking in your target language without translating.

I encourage you to be creative and come up with your own exercises as well!
