There is nothing wrong with being thrilled about your language learning achievements.

Give yourself permission to celebrate!

What do I mean by landmarks?

For me, it was the first time someone thought I am a native speaker or when I read a book without the help of a dictionary.

These might seem subtle things, but it is essential to notice them. And it is also important to give yourself a little pat on the shoulder when you do notice it!

I’m reminding myself as I’m reminding you guys that replying to a text without the help of a translator website, or reading your first book in that language is actually a big deal and you should feel content about it! Noting down these „landmarks” or achievements is a great way to keep you motivated when you feel stuck. Just simply look at the notes to keep you going.

Another way to encourage yourself when you feel stuck is by reading old text messages, e-mails, exercise books… etc. So dig in your drawer and look through those books and exercise books from years ago! This will remind you of how much you’ve developed. And you can also have a good laugh about it…

and do a little celebratory dance, you deserve it!

With that being said you should intentionally set small goals like the ones I mentioned above for yourself every day that you can be proud of. Set sending a text as a goal and not just passing your language exam. You will feel more accomplished.
